What is the Canada Plastics Pact?

The CPP unites Partners behind a vision of a circular economy for plastic, in which plastics stay in the economy and out of the environment.

Vision

The CPP’s vision is a circular economy for plastics.

Block 1

Eliminating unnecessary or problematic plastic packaging.

Block 2

Innovating so the plastic we do need can be safely reused, recycled, or composted.

Block 3

Circulating all the plastic items we use to keep them in the economy and out of the environment.

Commitment

The Canada Plastics Pact’s commitment is to:

Block 1

Focus on the root causes of plastics pollution, rather than the symptoms.

Block 2

Work collaboratively across the value chain to enable industry-wide systems change.

Block 3

Mobilize and align stakeholders and work towards the common vision – locally, nationally and globally.

Block 4

Harness and amplify the collective skills, leadership, expertise and capacity of Canadian stakeholders to advance knowledge, and catalyze innovation and new solutions.

How does the CPP work?

The CPP unites diverse leaders and experts in the national plastics value chain to collaborate and rethink the way we design, use, and reuse plastic packaging to realize a circular economy for plastic in Canada. This will also involve developing, piloting, and scaling innovative and bold solutions to overcome systemic barriers.

  • ENGAGE: Each CPP Partner has voluntarily stepped forward to work towards four bold ambitious targets, to 2025. The CPP seeks to build on extensive work already underway in Canada.
  • COLLABORATE:  The CPP brings together Partners in rethinking how plastics are designed, used, and reused. By drawing on its understanding of market roadblocks, the CPP will be solutions-oriented.
  • ACT: The CPP, with a bias towards action, will accelerate and fast-track new approaches for packaging in alignment with emerging policy and legislation to achieve industry-wide transformation.

As a member of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s global Plastics Pact network, the CPP is aligned behind this common global vision, with its action and solutions tailored to Canada’s unique needs and challenges.
