Making Flexible Plastic Packaging Recyclable

We are working to improve the recovery and recycling rates of flexible plastics collected from Canadian households and to increase the proportion of recycled content in flexible packaging.

The Challenge

  • Flexible plastic packaging represents a significant portion of plastic waste in Canada
  • Current collection and recycling rates remain low
  • Sorting facilities lack necessary technology to process these materials effectively

PRFLEX Project Spotlight

Optimizing the Recycling System for Flexible Plastic Packaging in Canada

To improve the overall system, the PRFLEX initiative’s first undertaking—carried out in collaboration with other leaders in circularity—was a foundational study on the current state of flexible plastic packaging (FPP) recycling in Canada.

The research objectives were to:

  • Gather baseline data to determine the percentage of FPP currently collected, sorted, and recycled by format and type in each province.

  • Identify infrastructure gaps at material recovery facilities and reclaimers.

  • Propose new technologies and optimize processes to increase capture rates, improve sorting, and produce higher-quality post-consumer recycled resins.

Film & Flexibles Workshop Series

The U.S. and Canada Plastics Pacts co-hosted a series of technical workshops to identify current innovation pathways for flexibles and films across different plastic packaging formats and solve technical issues and challenges for converting to mono-material flexibles and films.
