Investing in Circular Plastics Innovation

Our Reuse Accelerators unite industry innovators to scale breakthrough reuse/refill systems across Canada. We’re breaking down barriers, filling critical knowledge gaps, and building the infrastructure needed to move proven solutions from pilot to nationwide impact.

By demonstrating successful scaling of proven reuse applications, these accelerators are establishing new standards and possibilities for Canada’s circular plastics economy.

The Reuse Challenge

Despite growing enthusiasm for circular packaging solutions, Canada faces critical barriers that prevent widespread adoption of reuse systems:

  • Promising reuse solutions trapped at pilot scale without coordinated support
  • Uncertain returns deterring financial backing for innovative reuse models
  • Limited connections between solution providers and businesses seeking reuse and refill opportunities 
  • Lack of regulatory frameworks and policies that incentivize reuse

The Reuse Accelerator is designed to overcome these challenges by creating the collaborative infrastructure needed to scale proven solutions nationwide.

Reuse Accelerator Spotlight

Canadian Tire and EcoTank Canada Partner to Provide Bulk Dispenser Alternatives for Windshield Washer Fluid

Challenge:
Each year, more than 6 million single-use plastic jugs—equivalent to 800,000 kg of HDPE plastic—are used to package windshield washer fluid, contributing to plastic waste.

Circular Solution:
To tackle this challenge, Canadian Tire partnered with EcoTank Canada to introduce bulk windshield washer fluid dispensers as a refill alternative. With support from the Canada Plastics Pact’s Reuse Accelerator, Canadian Tire expanded the initiative by adding dispensers to Canadian Tire Gas+ gas bars in Ontario and Quebec.

Impact by the Numbers:

  • 23+ dispenser locations installed across Ontario and Quebec

  • 27,100+ single-use plastic jugs diverted from landfill

  • 3,200+ kg of plastic avoided through refills

Eliminating Single-Use Plastic Windshield Washer Jugs

Reuse Accelerator Spotlight

Transforming Packaging Procurement at Schools and Campuses Across Canada

Challenge:
Schools, colleges, and university campuses generate high volumes of single-use packaging waste through on-site food services—much of it unnecessary and difficult to recycle. Without viable reuse systems, this packaging continues to contribute to Canada’s growing plastic waste problem.

Circular Solution:
Friendlier is partnering with major food service providers like Compass Group Canada and Aramark Canada to scale a reusable packaging program. Their tech-enabled system makes it easy for students and staff to return, track, and reuse containers—supporting waste reduction without sacrificing convenience.

Impact by the Numbers:

  • 3.2 million reusable packages in circulation

  • 185,000+ kg of plastic waste diverted from landfill
